Acupunture During Childbirth

In the ongoing search for alternative methods of pain control during childbirth acupuncture is becoming a method employed by more women. At one time women followed whatever suggestions their doctors gave them when it came to giving birth. Bit over the decades this has changed as more women wanted to be aware of what was going on and wanted to make decisions that they believed affected not just the birth of their child but those first moments. Women do not want to be drugged during birth anymore and though sometimes things happen that make it unavoidable they want to have a say it how the birth progresses.

So instead of having an epidural which basically makes their lower body numb and makes them unable to feel anything they are looking to acupuncture as a means to eliminate the pain without eliminating the feeling of labor and birth. Acupuncture not only seems to act on the pain but it also helps the pregnant woman relax. This can make the delivery a much more pleasant experience for her.

In Europe, where acupuncture has been more acceptable for longer, some countries are showing up to twenty five percent of women using acupuncture during delivery. In America the number of women using this method is growing. How the needles are placed will vary from woman to woman as they reflect an individual’s pain and progress during delivery. In a study of two hundred women during delivery it was found that those who used acupuncture were less likely to request an epidural.

It also found that overall their labors were shorter. This can be explained by the fact that an epidural will almost always slow down the progress of labor. The study results show without a doubt that women using acupuncture experienced less pain during labor. They had shorter labors and so were less exhausted after the birthing experience. Since they did not require something for the pain, an epidural for example, they had fewer side effects following the birth.

One situation that acupuncture will not be useful is when a woman arrives at the hospital and birth is imminent. This happens more often the most people think. In cases like this there is no time for the acupuncturist to begin to insert the needles to alleviate the pain. If the baby’s head is already presenting itself there will barely be time to take her to a delivery room and deliver the baby.

In cases like this another alternative must be used. Though often if labor has progressed this far it will be natural birth as time will allow nothing else. Continued studies on the use of acupuncture are ongoing as are many on how acupuncture affects different conditions. Doctors and scientists are still skeptical about this Chinese traditional medicine which relies as much in the philosophy of the balance of the body’s energy as it does on the medical side of the treatment. This baffles scientists especially because they cannot explain to themselves why it works so well.
