Acupuncture for Children

While many people think that acupuncture might be good for them there are few people that consider using this treatment for their children. The thought is that they are too young to benefit from it. In China it is very common to use acupuncture to treat children as a preventive medicine as well as for medical issues. The key to having a child in an acupuncture treatment program is to be sure that the therapist is familiar with the care of children. Acupuncture for adults and for children is very different. Talk to the acupuncturist and be certain that they have taken the extra courses required to understand how to treat children with acupuncture.

Parents are often reluctant to bring their children in for acupuncture treatments even when they themselves use it. One reason for this is because parents seem to assume that children are naturally afraid of needles and so the treatments will not go well. But in fact not all children are afraid of needles and if the parents present it in the right way they will be calmer and less afraid. The interesting thing is that not all acupuncture treatment requires needles.

Sometimes an acupuncture device is used that emits a small pulse. This feels different then a needle and can even feel more like a tickle then the prickle of a needle. This treatment tends to relax the child and make acupuncture an okay thing. Along with acupuncture Chinese Traditional Medicine also suggest the use of herbs, these can take the place of antibiotics.

More parents prefer to use alternative medicines then always be using strong medications on themselves and their children. Acupuncture can help children with hyperactivity, coughs, digestive difficulties including diarrhea and constipation. They will suggest to you some dietary changes since the philosophy regarding children includes the belief that many of the things that go wrong for kids can be related back to what they eat.

Acupuncturists also believe that they can help with the behaviors of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, known as ADHA, and attention deficit disorder, also called ADD, through Chinese Traditional Medicine. Treatments for these problems can take a while for them to respond to, often up to thirty treatments before the results are changed from erratic to positive. At first they react to the treatment with anger, and will sometimes become hard to handle directly after a treatment. After the first few treatments this reaction comes under control.

The acupuncturists will suggest some diet changes here as well often telling the parents to lessen the child’s intake of milk products, sugar and most junk foods. This shows how Chinese medicine agrees with western medicine. The two are not as far apart as some westerns health care providers think.

Ear infections are another place that acupuncture can help. It certainly is better than constantly treating a child with antibiotics. This is something that the acupuncturists can treat whether it is acute, happening once and a while, or chronic, a condition that is recurring.
